Legal in Penn publishes general information about Pennsylvania law. Please read this disclaimer before you rely on any guide.
Not legal advice
Nothing on this site is legal advice. Our guides explain how Pennsylvania statutes and regulations generally work. They cannot account for the facts of your situation, and reading them does not create an attorney-client relationship with anyone. Legal in Penn is not a law firm, and its writers are not acting as your lawyers.
Laws change
The Pennsylvania General Assembly passes new acts throughout its two-year session, and courts and agencies change how existing laws apply. We date every guide and update it when we learn of a change, but a guide may not reflect the newest developments on the day you read it. Always check the current official text of the law.
Local rules
Pennsylvania’s cities, boroughs and townships, including Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, can adopt ordinances that add to state law. Where we know a local rule matters, we mention it, but we cannot cover every ordinance in the state’s more than 2,500 municipalities.
Get help from a professional
If you face a criminal charge, a lawsuit, a divorce, an injury claim or any decision with legal consequences, talk to a lawyer licensed in Pennsylvania. If you cannot afford one, legal aid programs in Pennsylvania may be able to help.
No liability
We work hard to keep every guide accurate, but we make no warranty about completeness or accuracy, and we are not liable for actions taken based on this site. See our terms of use and editorial policy for more.
